Tell us about yourself

I am Nameen Azeem, a multipotentialite visual artist who is running a fashion label and juggling with her passion for filmmaking simultaneously.

How did you come up with the idea of Metanoia?

Back in 2015 when I was in my 4th semester of fashion design studies, I made a very impulsive decision to start a venture on my own. As I was very passionate to create temporal art pieces for people who were focused on the “different”, it made me explore more; hence leading to the creation of Metanoia.

Initially, I decided to start off with a limited number of crafted handbags; designed and hand painted which received an overwhelming response in terms of sales.

What made me gladder was that later, they were featured in a few lifestyle magazines.

This was what pushed me to work on the idea of creating a label producing original art driven stuff only (be it handbags, apparel or home decor products).

The intricately handpainted ‘Camels of Rohi’ bag is a statement piece that gets heads to turn.

What was your motivation behind this venture?

The word “Metanoia” means ‘spiritual transformation’. For me art is something that I find potent enough to alter the way I see things, causing spiritual changes in the longer run.

The main motivation behind this venture was to bring positivity to people’s lives through the art pieces created under this brand.

Any challenges that you faced that proved to be an obstacle?

Entrepreneurs have it very hard. There’s no way other than to start from scratch. And without sugarcoating anything here; I’ve had sleepless nights, endless days of working alone in my studio to keeping myself isolated. Handling setbacks, managing funds, trying to do everything by myself to get my way throughout the bootstrapping phase, it all came in the package.

Is it hard being a woman with an idea to accomplish?

I feel it’s very empowering to be able to control your actions with a sense of purpose and to bring your ideas to life. If you are a male, you may already feel more in control because that’s the cultural upbringing. But for a female, it can be a bit unfamiliar, but a very nice feeling too indeed.

Any advice for those who have ideas as great as yours?

Yes. “GO OUT & DO IT”. And Don’t ever reject any idea because it doesn’t seem workable. As with every great idea you come up with, you have to be rebellious to bring out the courage in order to refuse what already has been established. One need some to be mindful that it requires tons of effort, an abundance of patience, multiple choices and challenges because it’s always a marathon and not a sprint.

Describe yourself in three words.

Introvert, Stubborn and Non-conformist.

How do you manage work-life balance?

This is the one that I keep struggling with on a daily basis. I have to keep aligning my personal time with my priorities. Also, have to coordinate things according to the situations that I’m bound in. However, I keep myself flexible enough to cope up with my work mechanism.
